Product Comparison: Three Capsule Coffee Machines under £100

This review continues the series of coffee machine comparisons that will help coffee lovers and those new to the world of coffee to understand the range of machines available. It will help you to make an informed decision on which is the best Capsule Coffee Machine for you, and which of the three popular coffee machines around or under £100 featured below, we think is the best buy. If you would like to know more about the Manual Espresso Coffee Machines then please see our Product Comparison: Three Manual Espresso Coffee Machines under £100.

Capsule Espresso Coffee Machines explained

If you love coffee but have never considered having your own coffee machine before then the capsule coffee machines could be a good place to start. They have been around for a few years now and have gained in popularity as they boast an easy way to get a ‘Coffee Shop’ style coffee at home. The main difference between Capsule Coffee Machines and other types of coffee machine is that the coffee is provided in ready made capsules. These capsules are filled with ground coffee and you simply ‘pop it in’ to the machine. For most machines the coffee making process is quite simple, turn the machine on and wait up to 30 seconds for it to heat up, fill up the water tank, pop in the desired capsule, press a button or pull a lever to start the process and wait for your perfectly made coffee to start pouring in to your cup. Simple.

Most of these coffee machines don’t have a built-in milk frother, the frothy milk comes from another capsule or from your own milk mixed separately. So if you like frothy milk, then there are additional milk frothers you can buy to go with your machine or purchase a package of coffee machine and milk frother. Some machines supply milk capsules as well as coffee capsules, for example, cappuccinos and lattes come with two capsules which you swap during the coffee making process to add your frothy milk. Although some people complain that these milk capsules are too sweet.

The down side to capsule machines is that you are limited to the manufacturers own brands of coffee. Some have a wide range, others are more limited, but you don’t have the option of experimenting with different types of coffee. If you choose the right machine there are compatible capsules around now which broadens the range of coffee available. If you like to experiment with different kinds of coffee, or grind your own, then perhaps a Manual Espresso Coffee Machine would suit you better.

Other types of coffee machines include Manual Espresso Coffee Machines, Bean-To-Cup Coffee Machines and the more traditional filter coffee machines.

What to look for in a Capsule Coffee Machine

We think the following things are important to consider when looking for your perfect Capsule Coffee Machine. Many of these things are down to your own personal taste or use of the machine so think carefully about what is right for you and how you will use the machine before you decide on the best one. Consider the following points:

  1. The size of cup you expect to use with the machine.
  2. Are you happy with standard size coffees, (ristretto, espresso, lungo) or do you want to control the volume of water that goes in to your coffee?
  3. What particular brands of coffee do you like, and is there a manufacturer that provides this brand?
  4. Do you want your machine to make drinks other than just coffee?

The Three Capsule Coffee Machines

You can see all three of these capsule coffee machines plus other highly recommended machines in the Kitchen & Cook Shop Amazon storefront.

The Comparison

The following three Capsule Coffee Machines were all chosen to suit a budget of about £100 or less.

1. Bosch Tassimo Vivy TAS1402GB Multi Beverage Machine

The Bosch Tassimo Vivy TAS1402GB Multi Beverage Machine is a Tassimo T-Disc pod or capsule coffee machine. This Bosch Tassimo machine has an RRP of £107.49 but is frequently on special offer, sometimes costing just £39.99.
Bosch Tassimo Vivy TAS1402GB Multi Beverage Machine

The Tassimo machine has a 0.7 Litre water tank, 1300 Watt of power and a very small footprint of just 17cm in width. It is available in black, red and cream colourways. Reviewers say that the machine is easy to set up, doesn’t make a mess and is easy to clean.

The Bosch Tassimo coffee machine incorporates a barcode reader for the capsules that are used by this machine. Each capsule has a barcode which is read by the machine to produce the perfect coffee every time. Then if you want to add extra hot water you just press and hold the button. But make sure you have the correct size cup underneath as the initial amount of water is automated.

Not only can you make lots of different types coffee, lattes, and cappuccinos with this machine, but also hot chocolate and teas. The milk and coffee capsules can be bought separately to mix and match and there are a wide range of Tassimo discs around from brands including Costa, Kenco, Carte Noir, Cadbury, Oreo and a variety of Twinings tea, so if any of these are your favourite this could be the machine for you. The capsules can be a little pricey so it is wise to shop around to find the best prices, usually by buying in bulk or special multi-packs. The price per capsule can be around 40p. Tassimo discs can also be found in many supermarkets making it easier to purchase them with your weekly shop.

This Bosch Tassimo Vivy 2 (as it is known) is a replacement for the Bosch Tassimo Vivy which was very highly rated. This new coffee machine is also showing strong reviews too. On the previous model, some people aren’t happy with the temperature of the coffee produced whilst others complained that the instructions weren’t easy to follow, however we would like to think that Bosch have addressed any issues with the earlier coffee maker and created another winner!

2. De’Longhi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Capsule Coffee Machine

The Nescafé Dolce Gusto Coffee Machine EDG250.B Jovia by Delonghi is another capsule coffee machine that uses it’s own brand of capsules. There are many different versions of the Nescafé Dolce Gusto coffee machine, some are made by Delonghi and others by Krups. For this comparison we have chosen the Jovia machine by Delonghi as it is a more modern machine and seems to have had some of it’s initial issues fixed. The Nescafé Dolce Gusto Jovia has an RRP of £89.99 but can often be found for less than £40.00. It also can be purchased as a black version.

De'Longhi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Capsule Coffee Machine

If you like Nescafé coffees then you could be in for a treat with this capsule coffee machine. There are over 30 different types of Nescafé drinks available including hot chocolate and chai tea. The pods are specially designed to let enough water through at a certain pressure to create the perfect cup, so an espresso coffee would need less water at a higher pressure, whereas the milk capsules would need much less pressure. Unlike the Tassimo T-Discs, the Dolce Gusto capsules are bought in types together, so the latte box is capsules of milk and coffee, and so is the cappuccino. This means it’s harder to mix and match the types.

The Dolce Gusto has a 0.8 litre water tank, an adjustable drip tray to allow different size cups and a 15 bar pressure pump to create a good coffee crema similar to coffee shop coffees. It is classed as a manual capsule machine as you control the amount of water that comes through the machine to make your coffee. Recommended amounts are listed on the instructions that come with each coffee type, then it is up to you to make a judgement call on what is 250ml and allows you to change the amounts according to your own taste. Some people find this difficult to judge themselves and so would probably benefit from a more automatic machine that delivers the exact amount of water. If you like to be flexible, or like the flavour of a particular coffee but would like it stronger or weaker, this machine allows you to make the adjustment. Of course remembering what you have done from time to time may require a post-it note if you have a memory like mine!

Most reviewers are happy with this machine, previous versions had problems including leaking and having a European plug attached instead of a UK one, but this one doesn’t seem to have those problems. Some people say the instructions are hard to follow, and they don’t like the fact that you have to measure the water yourself. People like the sleek oval design and it’s compact nature, but the biggest problem seems to be the bright red lead and plug. On a black machine a lot of people have returned the machine just for that reason alone. Nescafé have said that the red lead and plug is to adhere to their brand image which now has a red accent over the last ‘e’. This seems to be a design flaw for a lot of people, and the colour of the plug is the most asked question on amazon.

The main issue with the Dolce Gusto apart from the red lead and plug is the price of the capsules, they are more expensive than the Tassimo discs, when using two discs for coffee and milk at 65p each the whole coffee is then costing £1.30p. Slightly more than Tassimo’s 40p each capsule. So although the machine costs less than the Tassimo machine, the capsules are more expensive and it would ultimately depend on which flavours and brands of coffee you prefer and your budget as to which is the better of the two.

3. Krups Nespresso Inissia Capsule Coffee Machine

The original Nespresso Inissia coffee machine seen here is now quite a few years old. It can still be purchased new – a testament to its longevity – however there is a newer version of the Inissia that uses the standard Nespresso pods and is highly rated, the Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine by Krups.

The Nespresso Inissia Coffee Capsule Machine by Krups has an RRP of £89.99. It holds its price well due to its popularity but can sometimes be found on offer. The Inissia by Krups comes in many colours and we think has a retro looking design with a small work top foot-print and very clever drip tray and waste collection unit.

Krups XN100140 Nespresso Inissia Capsule Coffee Machine

It is wise to note the difference between the Nescafé machines and Nespresso machines as they are quite often confused. Nescafé is a brand of coffee that now have capsule coffee machines made by Krups and Delonghi. Nespresso is a brand of coffees that are made by Nestlé and have their own capsule machines also made by Krups and Magimix. Nespresso capsule coffee machines are also popular and their whole branding gives them a more ‘designer’ feel.

The Inissia machine is a very highly rated coffee machine. It can be both automated and manual for complete control of your coffee making. You can also reprogram the espresso and lungo buttons to your own specific amounts of water so that you can press the button the next time and walk away without fear of overflowing. The drip tray folds up if you want to use a larger mug and when filling the 0.7 litre water tank it simply slots in and out. It boasts an awesome 19 bar pressure pump to give a creamy coffee crema. The main complaint with this machine is that it can be very noisy, so if you can put up with that for a good, easy to make cup of coffee there’s nothing to worry about.

The Inissia, like the Dolce Gusto and Tassimo doesn’t have a milk frother, but it also doesn’t have milk capsules so if you want to add milk you have to add it yourself with or without a frother. For most people this is not a problem. The best thing about the Inissia and Nespresso machines is that there are more and more Nespresso compatible capsules coming onto the market. All major supermarkets sell own brand and non-brand nespresso compatible capsules that fit and work well with the Inissia. This makes the cost of capsules quite competitive and you can pick them up for as little as 16p each, which is quite a bit cheaper than the others. This also means there is room to try out different kinds of coffee and you are not so limited to only Nespresso capsules. The Inissia comes with a selection of Nespresso coffees to try when you first buy a machine, a great introductory gift so you can find out which you like. Nespresso coffees can be purchased on line from the Nespresso website, or from special Nespresso Boutiques around the country. With prices per Nespresso capsule ranging between 29p – 35p these are still cheaper than the Tassimo and Dolce Gusto capsules.

The Results

The Nespresso Inissia Coffee Capsule Machine by Krups is a great little machine, it ticks all the boxes for its design, robustness, versatility and ease of use and the compatibility of the capsules and their price. Although you pay a bit more for the Inissia than the Dolce Gusto, in the long run you will pay a lot less on capsules and accessories. The Bosch Tassimo Vivy TAS1402GB (Vivy 2) comes a close second, and although it is not quite so versatile with its water volume control it does have a wide variety of capsules at a fairly good prices. The De’Longhi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Coffe Machine has had problems in the past, and we feel it is more for those who like Nescafé coffee and don’t mind the quirkiness of the design and the more expensive capsules.

The Krups Nespresso Inissia was also chosen as one of our Editor’s Choice products. You can read a review about it here: Review: Nespresso Inissia Capsule Coffee Machine by Krups.

We hope you have enjoyed this article and have a better understanding of what to look for in a capsule coffee machine. Please leave any recommendations you have about the best coffee or machine in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

4 ways to bring Floral Designs to Afternoon Tea

At the moment we are loving floral designs at the Kitchen and Cook Shop, and many of these items will also make lovely gifts. There are many beautiful floral designs around, from the popular shabby chic and Royal Albert designs that you might remember seeing in your gran’s cabinet, to the more modern minimalistic floral designs. Guys may not like it, but it would be great if we could have tea parties with our friends every day from flower covered cups and plates!

4 ways to bring floral designs to afternoon tea

So for those of us who love floral designs and relish throwing a fun tea party here are some fantastic and beautiful ways to bring in those floral designs. These items will also make great gifts for those who love flowers.

Floral Cake Stands

Afternoon tea simply cannot be served without a cake, so these floral cake stands are the perfect way to show off your home made tasty treats. Or if you are a bit of a cheat, they are a great way to present your shop bought cakes in a home made style.

Floral Mugs

Technically afternoon tea should be served in a cup, but what if you want a good size cup of tea? I like to have modern style afternoon tea, served in mugs but from a tea pot. Why not have floral mugs to match your tea set for a good cuppa with or without a teapot?

Floral Teapots

Teapots are often collectors items and are not necessarily found in homes so much anymore. That is a big shame as there are some beautiful looking floral Teapots around. For those who love a tea party the humble Teapot can be the show piece of the table, they also make a stunning gift for that very special someone.

Floral Tea Sets

Tea Sets can include a range of different items, from sets that include a Teapot, sugar bowl and milk jug, to full sets including cups and saucers. There are also fabulous tea-for-one sets, (teapot, cup and saucer, or cup, saucer and side plate) that make unique gifts or allow you to enjoy your daily cuppa from your own personal floral tea set. (No boys allowed!)

We hope this has shown what is available with floral designs, either to match what you have already or enhance the tea parties you hold. We’d love to know what your favourite designs are, so please leave us a message in the comments below.

Recipe Books from Jamie Oliver, Lorraine Pascale, and The Hairy Bikers

In August 2015, cooks all over the UK were treated to the release of not one, but three, fantastic recipe books! New cook books from Jamie Oliver, The Hairy Bikers and TV Chef Lorraine Pascale hit the shelves and online stores.

All three recipe books are a little different from each other so in this post I’m just going to take a quick look at these three books for your kitchen.

Please note that in this post I will be looking at the hardback printed editions of the books, but you may find that these recipe books are also available in paperback and Kindle format too.

Everyday Super Food by Jamie Oliver

Let us start with one of the UK’s most loved chefs. Jamie Oliver is one of those TV cooks that always seem to come up with great ideas and recipes, and in his new book he is concentrating on helping you to create healthy and tasty meals at home with a daily calorie limit. The book is split into sections such as breakfasts, lunches and dinners with all the recipes in each division coming in at a specific calorie count. Jamie has designed the book this way to ensuring that if you stick to the recipes and don’t deviate too much with snacking, you should not go over the recommended daily allowance of calories (2000 women/2,500 men).

Everyday Super Food by Jamie Oliver

I think that this is a great idea. I’m sure that it has been done before, but I doubt that it will have been done with Jamie’s flair. Recipes include smoothie pancakes with fruit, yogurt and nuts for breakfast, fish tacos or chili salsa for lunch and griddled steak, vegetables and tabbouleh rice for dinner.

Reviews show that this book is easily as successful as many of his other recipe book offerings.

Eating Well Made Easy by Lorraine Pascale

I do not know who Lorraine Pascale is because I rarely watch television, but she seems to have quite a following. In her new tome she and has created a recipe book with many simple and easy to make dishes that are great for our busy lifestyles; recipes that are also nutritious too.

Eating Well Made Easy by Lorraine Pascale

This cook book includes simple breakfasts, lunches and flavoursome midweek dinners – perfect for our busy lives. Inside you will also find weekend dishes to impress your dinner guest with! Every recipe is well balanced and does not contain processed food, and they are all packed with flavour too – something that Lorraine is well known for.

Reviewers feel that chef Lorraine Pascale has created a gem of a cook book! Words such as “an inspiring book that I cannot wait to get trying out” and “Finally, a chef who cooks real food” are high praise indeed.

The Hairy Bikers’ Meat Feasts

Moving away a little from ‘healthy’ food, we arrive at the latest cook book from Si and Dave, better known as The Hairy Bikers. The Hairy Bikers’ Meat Feasts contains a plethora of great meat recipes including family roast dinners, meat pies, spicy dishes and ‘zingy’ salads – sounds great!

The Hairy Bikers’ Meat Feasts

It’s not all about meat either. The Hairy Bikers also create some delicious vegetable dishes for you to try at home. Casseroles, roasts, grilled food and more are all included in this cook book. Discover over 120 great recipes for chilli con carne, soups and curries using lamb, beef or pork. This cook book surely is a meat lovers delight!

Great reads

Whatever your ‘flavour’ in recipe books, I am sure that you’ll find something in any of these three books to inspire you to cook more.

12 Great Lunch Boxes for Children

It’s almost ‘back to school’ time for the youngsters so I thought that I would pick twelve great looking lunch boxes and lunch bags, perhaps giving you some idea of what brilliant options there are nowadays for safely packing your kiddies lunches! Themed packed lunch containers also make an excellent gift at any time of the year, not only for when the youngsters head back to school.

When I was young my packed lunch was given to me in a clear plastic Tupperware tub which, although practical, was very boring to look at! A couple of my school friends had fancy lunch boxes, but most of us had cheap and cheerful plain tubs. Now you can buy lunch bags, lunch tins and lunch boxes in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and styles, and we also have the fantastic option of bento boxes too – which look great, are practical and easily allow us to make a healthy packed lunch for children.

Star Wars Lunch Boxes

I was 7 years old when Star Wars was released and I dragged my father to the cinema many times to see it! Now we have many Star Wars movies being released so there are a great variety of lunch bags and boxes available for fans of the Star Wars franchise. We like those featured below:

Lunch Bags for Girls

I’m probably not being very politically correct but I would imagine that the following three lunch bags are designed with girls in mind especially those featuring female Disney characters. We particularly like these lunch bags:

Lunch Kits for the Very Young

These lunch boxes and bags are perfect for the really young (and possibly not-so-young!) that wish to carry their food in a happy and fun pack. Why not use happy eating to promote healthy eating from a young age. These lunch packs are lots of fun:

Lunch Boxes are Not Just for Kids!

My following favourite lunch boxes are not just for children. Below we have a retro style VW Camper Van lunch bag sandwiched (excuse the pun) between two bento boxes, one of which is a Studio Ghibli licensed lunch box, and I am a HUGE fan of anything Studio Ghibli so I’m going to buy this one myself! The Yumbox is a great modern example of the classic Japanese lunch box, and it’s totally leakproof too.

Which is your favourite?

I’ve shown you my choice of kids lunch boxes… what’s your favourite? I like them all, but my overall favourite is probably the Studio Ghibli lunch box above!

Potato and Chorizo Chowder Recipe

According to Wikipedia, Chowder is a seafood or vegetable stew, often served with milk or cream and mostly eaten with saltine crackers, so really I’m not sure if I should call this recipe a chowder as it does contain meat.

The original recipe was called a Creamy Vegetable Chowder but I have adapted and altered the dish to my own tastes, including adding the lovely Spanish cured sausage, chorizo. I guess that you could add any meat to this dish if that is your desire!

Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of stews however I do like chunky soups, especially when it’s chilly outside, and this dish is similar to a thick soup. It is bold, warming and very tasty. It’s probably pretty good for you too as it contains lots of vegetables.

I make this chowder recipe whenever I have an excess of ‘stock’, usually the remaining liquid from cooking chicken in our slow cooker. Sometimes this liquid is used to make gravy, but I often keep some aside to make this lovely stew recipe.

Enough with the talk, on with the recipe!

Chorizo
Potato and Chorizo Chowder

Potato and Chorizo Chowder Recipe

As with all my recipes, you do not need to be too exact with the ingredients quantities or the directions. Cooking is about enjoyment and experimenting and I never take it too seriously!

Ingredients

Makes 6 to 8 servings.

  • 30ml olive oil (approx.) or 3 tablespoons butter/margarine
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • chorizo, diced (approx 250ml)
  • 250ml chopped celery
  • 250ml chopped red or green pepper
  • 500ml sliced carrots
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • ground black pepper
  • 750ml chicken broth
  • 500ml milk
  • half teaspoon parsley (fresh or dried)
  • 60ml cold water
  • 60ml cornstarch
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • Grated cheese (optional)

Directions

  1. Heat up the olive oil (or melt the butter/margarine) in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook until tender.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for a minute, then add the chorizo and cook for a further 5 minutes.
  3. Add the carrots and celery and cook for 10 minutes or until they become a little tender. Add the chopped peppers, potatoes and chicken stock and add salt and ground black pepper to taste. Bring to the boil and allow to simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes or until all the vegetables are tender.
  4. Add the milk and parsley and heat until just boiling.
  5. In a separate bowl, stir the cornstarch into the cold water. Once it has completely dissolved, add it to the chowder. Stir for a minute and then serve in bowls with grated cheese sprinkled on top and a chunk of crusty roll on the side.

We often serve our potato and chorizo chowder with boiled rice because we’re greedy like that!

Review of the Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife

Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife
In early 2015, we purchased from Amazon a new small serrated kitchen knife to replace an aging serrated knife that could no longer cut through fruit or vegetables very well. After doing some research and reading a number of reviews I finally plumped for the Kuhn Rikon Serrated Kitchen Knife, Model no. 22742.

The reviews on Amazon looked positive so I went ahead and ordered it, and spent a couple of days waiting in anticipation of getting a sharp knife to improve my time in the kitchen. Surely enough it arrived promptly and I quickly got to work trying out my new kitchen tool. It’s always fun testing out new kitchen gear, especially when you’ve spent your hard earned cash on it. On that note, I must point out that all reviews on Kitchen & Cook Shop are completely impartial. We do not receive goods to test from product manufacturers unlike some other websites, so you can be sure that our words are always genuine and honest because we’ve purchased the products ourselves!

Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife
Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife

Anyway, I digress… Let’s continue with the review shall we. The packaging was easy to access but also protective, which is always good, but I did notice that the plastic handle already had some very light surface marks on it. I assume these light scratches are from the manufacturing process, but I was a little disappointed to see them. The Kuhn Rikon 22742 serrated knife comes with a sheath to protect the blade, and your flesh whilst it is in storage too. It needs it to. This blade is very sharp.

The blade looks great in dark grey as it is coated in a non-stick material and I like the weight of the knife in my hand, however the knife is a little shorter than the one it replaced and I was disappointed in my choice of size. I think that perhaps I should have bought a longer bladed serrated knife.

Upon testing the knife I was immediately impressed at its sharpness. The Japanese Steel blade is very sharp but both I and my girlfriend find that the blade is too flexible. It tends to wander to the right for us when cutting apples and other tough fruits and vegetables. The Kuhn Rikon Colari serrated paring knife is excellent at cutting very thin slices and I enjoy cutting some very fine potato chips. I think that the non-stick coating really performs well. It is also very good at cutting meats and other edibles.

Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife
Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife
Kuhn Rikon 22742 Colari Serrated Kitchen Knife

The serrations on this knife are a lot coarser than those on my existing knife and I personally find them a little too coarse. It has a slight tendency to tear the skins of ripe tomatoes and softer fruits. There is also another problem with this knife, and I feel that it is quite a major problem. In fact, it is such a big problem for me that it deters me from using this knife as much as I would wish to.

In our opinion, the biggest problem with this kitchen knife is the handle. It is made of a smooth plastic which, when wet, is so slippery that one cannot keep a firm grip on the direction of the cut you are attempting to make. I have come close to cutting myself more than once as I find the knife twisting in my damp fingers. I do not have this problem with wooden or metal handled knives. Even knives with plastic handles that have a rough texture are fine, so I can only assume that it is either the smooth finish or the shape of this handle that makes it so dangerous.

  • Useable Blade Length: 90mm
  • Handle Length: 97mm
  • Blade Material: Steel
  • Handle Material: Plastic
  • Weight: Approx. 59g
  • Manufactured In: China

Final thoughts and rating

Unfortunately this kitchen knife is let down by some of its main features. We like the non-stick blade and the sharpness of it. The price is very favourable, but the aggressively coarse serrations, the tendency for the blade to wander whilst cutting and its slippery handle mean that Kitchen & Cook Shop can only give this kitchen knife a score of 3 out of 5.

I cannot find this knife on either the Kuhn Rikon website or on Amazon.co.uk anymore so I assume that it has been replaced with a newer knife of similar specs. There is a large choice of Kuhn Rikon products including knives on Amazon UK now and there is a knife that looks similar to this model which now has what looks like a rough textured handle so perhaps they have addressed the slippery handle issue. I hope so because I really want to like this serrated knife but I cannot.

Thanks for reading. I hope that this user review has helped!

Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken

Picture the scene if you will. It is 10.30 am on a March Monday morning, and I am sitting out in the garden catching the warmth of the sun’s rays and enjoying a ristretto made with our new coffee machine, when I suddenly realise that I have completely forgotten to prepare a dish for tonight’s evening meal. Okay, that may not be a problem for some, but I know that I am perilously forgetful and I had no idea what food we had in the house.

We had just finished a very busy weekend and shopping had not been on our list of things to do so the fridge was looking rather empty, but as fortune had it we had bought some chicken breasts the previous Friday that would be perfect if only I knew what to do with them. I found so many recipe choices online, but knowing that our kitchen cupboards were also terribly bare I needed a dish that required few other ingredients. To the rescue came realhousemoms.com with a wonderfully simple slow cooker recipe for honey garlic chicken that needed just 5 simple, common ingredients, so into the kitchen I headed, after finishing my coffee of course!

I’m a huge fan of my slow cooker despite its age and appearance and I tend to use it at least once a week. I find almost all meat cuts cook to perfection in it and with this recipe my girlfriend remarked that it was almost as if the meat was being marinated as it cooked, which is most probably the case.

Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken
Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken

I adapted the recipe from Real Housemoms a little to suit my tastes, but my full gratitude goes to Aubrey Cota for sharing the recipe in the first place. Being European, I don’t use cup sizes so I adjusted (and lowered a little) the quantities. I also added a couple of other ingredients, as is my want!

Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 4 large cloves of garlic, chopped or crushed
  • Pinch of paprika
  • A few mixed herbs
  • Dash of Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Dash of Tabasco sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken breasts aside for a moment and mix together all the remaining ingredients in a bowl. A whisk works well.
  2. Spoon a little of the mix onto the bottom of the slow cooker crock pot and spread around. Place the chicken breasts on top of the thin layer of paste mix.
  3. Poor the remaining mixture over the chicken, ensuring that all of the chicken is covered with the delicious goo!
  4. Cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or on high for approx. 3 to 4 hours or until chicken is done. I used a combination of ‘auto’ and low settings and it took about 6 hours.

We served our honey garlic chicken with a risotto made by my partner. She makes it so well and it tasted lovely.

This is definitely a recipe to make again and again, especially as it uses so few ingredients. It’s simple and flavoursome cooking – try it yourself today!

Lemon and Almond Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • 100g soft butter or margarine
  • 100g castor sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 185g plain flour (a little more may be needed)
  • Half a teaspoon baking powder
  • zest and juice of one lemon
  • a large handful of almonds or as many as you have available, crushed.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180c (gas mark 4, 350F).
  2. Add the sugar and butter and lemon zest to a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until creamy.
  3. Crush the almonds by putting them into a plastic bag and hitting them with a rolling pin until they are ‘chocolate chip’ size pieces.
  4. Add the vanilla essence and egg to the butter mixture and beat until thick and creamy.
  5. Add the lemon juice and two tablespoons of flour and mix well.
  6. Gradually add the rest of the flour, baking powder and the crushed almonds and continue mixing. The cookie dough should be thick and sticky so that it stands in peaks when the spatula is lifted from the mixture and it is tough to mix. Add more flour if it is not thick enough, it will depend on the size of the lemon and the amount of juice added.
  7. Using a tablespoon, spoon out half tablespoon size balls of the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with greaseproof/baking paper, and bake for 16 minutes or until the tops of the cookies are starting to turn golden.
  8. Place on a baking tray to cool.

These cookies will keep in an air tight container for up to a week, or can be frozen in bags.

Easy Pancake Recipe plus all the Tools you Need

As it’s almost pancake day we thought we’d share the traditional pancake recipe as I always find myself looking for it when the day arrives. Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent and the day itself moves depending on when Easter falls each year. For a little history, pancake day was originally a pagan holiday and symbolises the fight between the arriving spring and departing winter. The pancakes represented the sun and were made and eaten during the holiday. You can find out more about Shrove Tuesday on wikipedia.

Here is the basic pancake recipe, and we’ll leave it to you to add the traditional sugar and lemon topping, or maybe you will go for jam or chocolate, apple and pear, or perhaps a savoury version.

Pancake Recipe

Pancakes

To make 8 thin pancakes.

Ingredients

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 tbsp of sunflower/vegetable oil plus extra for frying.
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Put the flour and salt into a large bowl and make a well in the middle.
  2. Crack the eggs into the well in the middle of the flour, add the oil and only 50ml of the milk.
  3. Start mixing from the middle of the well and gradually draw in the flour from the edges. It will become a thick paste as you mix, keep mixing until all the flour is used and if the mixture becomes too thick to mix add a little more milk.
  4. Continue adding the rest of the milk slowly and keep mixing until you have a smooth batter. It should be the consistency of a thick cream.
  5. Heat a large flat pan or frying pan over a medium heat and grease with a thin layer of oil. (Use a piece of kitchen roll to spread the oil).
  6. Ladle some of the batter into the pan and swirl the pan to get an even covering of batter. Leave to cook untouched for 30 seconds. If the pan is a good temperature the pancake will turn golden on the bottom in 30 seconds.
  7. Flip the pancake over to cook on the other side for another 30 seconds. First loosen the pancake with a spatula and then lift and flip it over.
  8. Check the pancake is golden on the new side, and then tip it out onto a plate and serve, or leave to stack the others on top.

To serve

Pancakes can be served with many different toppings and it is a matter of your preference. Some of the best include chocolate sauce, maple syrup, honey, sugar and lemon, or slices of fruit.

Tools you may need

Here are a selection of tools that you may find useful in pancake making. We hope you enjoy your pancakes!

Product Comparison: Modern 24 Piece Cutlery Sets

In our home we are thinking of buying a new cutlery set as our existing knives, forks and spoons have seen far better days! My significant other on Kitchen & Cook Shop, insists on having a 24 piece cutlery set, whilst I only desire that it be modern and stylish, and not too expensive!

With these parameters in mind, I have been looking around on the Amazon UK website and have narrowed down my choices to those in this article. These cutlery sets are all those that I would consider modern in design and of good value too.

Villeroy & Boch 24 Piece Cutlery Sets

Quality lifestyle brand Villeroy & Boch have been making amazing products for your home since its foundation in 1748. They are well known for their ceramic and glass homeware products, but they also produce many cutlery sets for your dining pleasure. They produce a multitude of cutlery designs at a range of prices that suit most budgets. Villeroy & Boch cutlery is very highly rated on Amazon.co.uk, with all of their sets getting positive reviews from happy buyers.

The design of cutlery is a very personal choice. I quite like cutlery with a slightly rounded handle, and two of the Villeroy & Boch options below look as though they might suit my needs well. The first choice seen here is from the Vivo range and costs around £40, whilst the other two options here are priced at about £70.

Our other choices in 24 piece cutlery sets

My partner has always wanted a cutlery set from Viners, after the set she previously had was ‘borrowed and never returned’ by a disgruntled ex-boyfriend! My parents also use Viners cutlery and they certainly are of high quality. The set I quite like is the Viners Angel 24 Piece Cutlery Gift Box Set. There are a great many positive reviews on this Viners cutlery set, proving without doubt that it is a high quality product. The cutlery is made of 18:0 Stainless Steel, dishwasher safe and comes with a 25 year guarantee.

Another cutlery set that I like is the Judge Windsor BF50 24 Piece 18/10 Stainless Steel Cutlery Set. It is great value for a 24 piece cutlery set (at around £25) and they are perfect for every day use, although some buyers have complained of rust appearing after a while. They look easy to hold, and I would consider them to be a perfectly fine cutlery set. Judge make many different household and kitchen products, the majority of them very well rated, so there is some confidence to be had in this cutlery set.

Russell Hobbs is a well known and established brand and I was interested to find that this British manufacturer also made cutlery. Not surprisingly, the Russell Hobbs Deluxe Vienna 24-Piece Stainless Steel Cutlery Set is very highly rated, as most of their products are. This is a great looking cutlery set with a timeless design. It is also dishwasher safe and has an excellent 15 year guarantee.

Our final choice

We have yet to buy our cutlery set but the final choice seems to be between the Villeroy & Boch Vivo Group New Fresh Basic 24 Piece Cutlery Service and the Russell Hobbs Deluxe Vienna 24-Piece Stainless Steel Cutlery Set. The Russell Hobbs cutlery set about the same price the Villeroy & Boch set, but there is a certain timeless quality to the V&B set that I like, depsite it being part of their more ‘budget’ priced items. Perhaps I shall buy both – The Villeroy & Boch set for special occasions and the Russell Hobbs set for every day use!

Product Comparison: Three Manual Espresso Coffee Machines under £100

If you love your coffee having a coffee machine at home or work is probably very important to you, but if you don’t know much about coffee and the different machines available choosing the right one can be a difficult task. This review aims to help you understand the Manual Espresso Coffee Machine, whether it’s the right one for you, and which one of the three featured below all under £100, we think is the best buy.

Manual Espresso Coffee Machines explained

There are a few differences between manual espresso coffee machines and other types of coffee machine. The manual coffee machine requires ground coffee ready to add to the machine. So you can use your favourite brand of coffee, trial different flavours, or grind your own beans using a burr or blade coffee grinder. Sometimes the Easy Service Espresso pods (ESE pods) can be used in the machines, although if you want to use ready made pods you are probably better off buying a capsule coffee machine.

The manual espresso coffee machines are manual only in the fact that there is a routine you need to learn in order to make the perfect cup of coffee to suit you. This process involves adding the ground coffee and filters to the machine, tamping down the coffee and pressing the switch to heat up the water and start the process. Some of these machines also come with a milk frother, but some don’t so you have to use a separate method for milk. However for some people the frothy milk is not important. The beauty of these machines is that they are totally flexible, both with the kind of coffee you can use, and also that you can slightly modify the coffee making process to suit your own tastes.

Let’s look at the three contenders in this manual espresso coffee machine comparison shall we?

Swan SK22110CN Retro Pump Espresso Coffee Machine

Swan retro coffee machine in cream
The Swan SK22110CN Retro Pump Espresso Coffee Machine in cream is highly rated on Amazon UK with a price of £89.95. This coffee machine has a 1.2 litre water tank and accepts full size cappuccino cups or two espresso cups. You can also remove the drip tray to use a tall latte glass. This is important if you like a large cup of coffee as some people don’t like the small cups of coffee that most machines provide. The espresso shot of coffee and smaller size cups is what you would normally have in most coffee shops, so if you like a larger mug of coffee you may want to consider a more traditional filter coffee machine that caters for larger cups.

The Swan coffee machine is described as being easy to use although sometimes a little fiddly. This machine is great for making cafe lattes or cappuccinos as it has a steam arm for frothing milk. It is a short arm so not long enough for a 600ml jug. There have been some problems with this machine where a few people have reported that it produced coffee with a taste of plastic. This could just be a problem with a particular batch of machines, as more recent reviews say their coffee tastes fine.

There are many positive comments on this coffee machine with reviewers happy saying that it looks stylish and makes a hot coffee with good pressure. Most people say it is an excellent entry level machine at a good price. We think this machine would suit first time buyers, or those people just learning how to use a manual coffee machine. It is also available in a choice of colours: blue, green, and grey.

De’Longhi Traditional Pump Espresso Coffee Machine EC146.B

De'Longhi Traditional Pump Espresso Coffee Machine EC146.B
De’Longhi have a long history of making coffee machines and the De’Longhi Traditional Pump Espresso Coffee Machine EC146.B is very similar in spec to most other coffee machines in this price bracket. It has an RRP of £99.99 but can be found on offer quite regularly.

The Delonghi coffee machine again has a 1 litre water tank. You are able to make espressos with a perfect barista style crema, or lattes, cappuccinos and any other of your favourite coffee or milk drinks. The removable drip tray allows you to use a large cappuccino cup, or with the tray in place, two small espresso cups. This means if you like a larger cup or a small mug of coffee you will be able to use these, however reviewers say you will not get a normal size mug under it though. This machine is easy to use with a range of functions to help you make the perfect cup of coffee.

There are a few problems reported with this machine where buyers have purchased units that have leaked from the reservoir or the espresso arm. Some people have found it more difficult to understand how to use this machine and have needed advice, whilst others have complained that the coffee is not strong enough and doesn’t have a very good crema. Most say that the milk frother is very good, however people are not convinced on the quality of the machine and its longevity. Generally reviewers like this machine, it works as described and when you get the process correct it makes a hot, smooth coffee with crema. For the price, most people are satisfied with the De’Longhi Espresso EC146.B coffee machine.

Krups Opio Steam and Pump Coffee Machine

Krups XP320840 Opio Steam and Pump Coffee Machine

Finally we look at the Krups XP320840 Opio Steam and Pump Coffee Machine. Krups are another well known name in the coffee machine world so what does this machine have to offer? With an RRP of £149.99, this coffee machine is the most expensive here and is well above our £100 threshold, however it is often found on offer for less than £100 so we have included it. It has similar features to the other machines and is similar in design to the Delonghi coffee machine.

The Krups Opio coffee machine has a slightly larger water tank at 1.5 litres allowing you to make a few coffees on the go. It has 15 bar pump pressure and a steam nozzle to make cappuccinos and other frothy milk drinks. There are one and two-cup filters, so you can balance out the strength and size of your drink, and adjustable manual settings to give you total control of how you want your coffee made. Included is a coffee tamper and measuring spoon.

Reviews are generally favourable with buyers happy with the affordability of this coffee machine and the ease of use, however there have been a few worries about leaky seals, breakdowns and cheap plastic. Previous owners of Krups coffee machines reckon that the quality isn’t as good as it used to be but overall those who have bought this machine are content with their purchase.

The results

There seems to be little to choose between these three coffee machines so for us there is no clear winner. They all have similar specs, are priced similarly and make decent coffee. The Swan coffee machine has a retro vibe going on whilst the Delonghi and Krups coffee machines are more modern, so perhaps your choice will come down to how it looks in your kitchen rather than which makes the best coffee.

If you’re willing to spend a little more the De’Longhi Dedica Style, Traditional Barista Pump Espresso Machine, Coffee and Cappuccino Maker is an excellent option. It comes in four different colourways and is very highly regarded. It’s probably our choice of manual coffee machine but it does have an RRP of £219.00 although you can find it for around £160 when on special offer!

Espresso Coffee Machine Accessories

Here are some accessories for coffee machines that you might find useful:

Cool Blue Dinner Sets – Dining in Style!

Did you know that the colour blue suppresses the appetite? I don’t know how true this actually is, but if we do believe the colour experts, a blue dinner set would be an excellent choice for people that are dieting or aiming to eat less at mealtimes. This is the exact opposite of the red dinner sets and the colour red which is often used for decoration in restaurants where restaurateurs hope that the warm colour makes you eat more!

Having a colourful dinner set makes mealtimes more interesting and blue crockery has a classy, timeless feel to it. Ancient Asian bowls and crockery often had designs painted on them in blue, and I always felt that blue dinnerware looked naturally at home in the country house kitchens of England.

The colour blue is beneficial to the mind and body, and it produces a calming effect. Investing in a blue dinner set would add a certain calmness to mealtimes. Preparing your meal after experiencing a stressful day at work is not much fun, but at least if you serve the food on blue plates, you may begin to feel more relaxed whilst you eat, thus making it easier to ease yourself into the evening.

Blue tableware can make an excellent gift, especially for your friends or family who prefer a cleaner, more ‘clinical’ style in their kitchen. If you know of someone whose dinner service is looking a little tired or faded, why not surprise them with a useful gift for the kitchen!

Below are some of our favourite blue dinner sets. They are available in plain or patterned, porcelain or stoneware, and they are sure to make each mealtime a pleasure.

Product Comparison: Electric Rice Cookers

Rice cookers have been in existence for many hundreds of years. The British Museum has a ceramic rice steamer dated from 1250 BC on display, but electric versions have been around since 1945, the first commercial model being produced by Mitsubishi. It had to be constantly monitored and did not have an automatic switch off facility, but of course, things have come a long way since then and modern rice cookers include many functions that attempt to make rice cooking as easy and quick as possible.

In this article we will take a quick look at three rice cookers that can be found on Amazon.co.uk. We shall study the rice cooker reviews and let you know which of these rice cookers we prefer. They all cost from approx. £20 upwards and all have their fair share of user reviews on Amazon.

Russell Hobbs 19750 Rice Cooker and Steamer

We shall begin by looking at the Russell Hobbs 19750 Rice Cooker and Steamer. This rice cooker / rice steamer is the often the cheapest of the three reviewed, and was (and still is) the number 1 best seller in rice cookers on the UK Amazon website. This surprises me somewhat as it does have a lot of bad reviews which I feel would put buyers off from purchasing this rice cooker. Okay, first things first, what are the specifications on the Russell Hobbs Rice Cooker.

Russell Hobbs 19750 Rice Cooker and Steamer, 1.8 L - Silver

This rice cooker has a 1.8 litre capacity which equates to cooking ten cups of rice. It also has a ‘keep warm’ function which is perfect for those times when family members are unable to eat together at the same time. The Russell Hobbs Rice Cooker and Steamer has a glass lid so you can see how the food is cooking and it also claims to be a versatile kitchen appliance as it also functions as a steamer for vegetables and fish when using the supplied tray. Included is a spatula and measuring cup.

As I mentioned earlier, I was surprised to see this as a best selling rice cooker on Amazon.co.uk because it has received quite a few poor reviews. The majority of bad reviews are due to the rice cooker failing to work in a short space of time. Even those that had received a replacement item complained of further breakdowns with the replacement rice cooker. Another common complaint is that rice often burns on the bottom, both whilst cooking and when in ‘keep warm’ mode. Other reviewers mention that water oozes out and it’s messy to clean up.

It’s not all bad though. Many people that have purchased this rice cooker said that it makes good rice although I must say that the words ‘great’ or ‘excellent’ are rarely mentioned – just ‘good’! A few people note that it is not as big as Russell Hobbs claim and they struggle to get 10 cups of rice in the machine.

Crock-Pot Digital Rice Cooker

Okay, let us move on to the much more expensive Crock-Pot 1.8L Digital Rice Cooker in Gun-Metal Grey. The price of this rice cooker is usually around £60 but sometimes it will drop to £40 in the sales. This is a great looking rice cooker from the well-known American manufacturer. Its styling sets it apart from many other rice cookers and I personally think that it would look great in any kitchen. As with the Russell Hobbs rice cooker above, the Crock-Pot Rice Cooker has a 1.8 litre capacity and can make cooked rice for up to 10 people, however it is also digital, hence the higher price tag.

What sets this rice cooker apart from many others is that the Crock-Pot Digital Rice Cooker has a trick up its sleeve – it also has a saute function. Turn on the saute plate, add a little oil and throw in your meat or vegetables for browning. This clever additional function means that you can easily cook dishes such as paella and risotto, as well as pasta dishes. You can also cook rice and oat-based desserts in here as well! It too is supplied with a glass lid, rice paddle and measuring cup. This rice cooker also has a steamer function too.

The Crock-Pot Digital Rice Cooker fairs better than the Russell Hobbs rice cooker when it comes to reviews on Amazon.co.uk. There is a poor user review about this rice cooker where the reviewer complains about rice sticking to the bottom and another gives a 3-star review moaning that they don’t like the look of the item – did they not look at the photo before they bought it, one wonders!. Often reviewers talk highly of the steamer and saute function and the stylish look of this rice cooker. A few reviewers say that they have never cooked rice so well before!

Tefal Rk1568uk Cooltouch Rice Cooker

Finally I would like to look at the Tefal Rk1568uk Cooltouch Rice Cooker. Tefal is a very well know brand and my expectations are high. Let us see how it fares shall we?

Tefal Cooltouch Rice Cooker

The capacity of this rice cooker is 1.8 litres too and the manufacturer says that it makes up to 20 portions of rice. As with the other rice cookers shown in this review article, it is supplied with a glass lid, measuring cup and spoon. You will also receive an instruction booklet and a steamer tray so that you can steam vegetables or fish in this rice cooker too. This rice cooker is part of the Tefal Cooltouch range so I would expect it to be safe to touch when in operation.

To my surprise, the reviews on this Tefal Cooltouch Rice Cooker are very comparable to the Russell Hobbs rice cooker reviewed in this article. There are many negative reviews as well as positive reviews. One purchaser claimed that this item is ‘dangerous’ (not a word I want to read when buying an electrical item) and others complain of burnt out switches, blown fuses and faulty machines. Replacement units also suffer from the same problems so I can only assume that there is a quality control issue somewhere.

Average reviews speak of burnt rice and that this rice cooker tends to make a mess when cooking. Positive reviewers are happy to recommend this rice cooker. Users speak of it making perfect rice and it being a capable steamer too. Some say that is a little large on the kitchen worktop, but not overly so.

Rice Cooker Reviews over… Which is the Winner?

So, what do we think at Kitchen and Cook Shop? Which rice cooker reviewed here would we buy if it were our money? Well, I have to be perfectly honest and say that I would not buy any of them! I don’t mean to be harsh but I have the Kitchen Craft Microwave Rice Cooker and I believe that is the best piece of kit in my kitchen. I don’t need or want an electric rice cooker, but for the purposes of this article I will choose one of the reviewed rice cookers.

I prefer the look of the Crock-Pot Rice Cooker over the other two but after reading all the reviews, it would appear that the Russell Hobbs Rice Cooker is the most reliable, more so than the Tefal Cooltouch Rice Cooker and the Crock-Pot Digital Rice Cooker. To be honest, I’m surprised at what I’ve read in all the reviews. I thought that these three manufacturers were producers of high quality kitchen equipment but I am starting to think otherwise. Have production values lessened over the years? Are tighter margins to blame for an increase in faulty goods being sold? I don’t really know, but I am less inclined to purchase kitchen goods from established brands without reading the reviews left by users and purchasers.

I guess that is what Kitchen & Cook Shop is all about really. We look at the plethora of product reviews so you don’t have to! Why not bookmark our home page and check back often to read our latest articles.

Corelle 12 Piece Dinner Sets for Everyday Use

In our household, the dinner set that we use for daily use is getting very tired looking. I have no idea how old it is, but this particular crockery dinner set was given to my partner by her grandmother, and I’m not even sure if it was brand-new then. My girlfriend is very sentimental and she wants to keep using this dinner set as it reminds her of her grandma that she loved dearly, but it really is looking very worn now.

The plates are scratched and there are a few small chips. I think that originally this dinner set must have been a 30 piece dinner set but all that remains now are 5 dinner plates, 3 side plates, 4 bowls, 3 teacups and 3 saucers. I think you would agree that we are desperately in need of new a dinner set for daily use.

Recently I noticed a great looking dinner set that claims to be chip and break resistant which would be perfect for our kitchen. It is the Corelle Vitrelle Glass 12-Piece Dinner Set which has an RRP of between £57.99 and £90.99 (depending on the pattern) but can sometimes be found for less in the sales.

When I originally wrote this article in 2015, this 12 piece dinner set was available in six different styles. Over the last few years different designs have been and gone. The sets shown below are those available at the time of writing however here you can view all Corelle dinner sets on Amazon UK.

Some of the features of these great dinner sets include:

  • Durability – Chip, break, stain and scratch resistant
  • Versatile – Microwave, dishwasher and oven safe
  • Usability – Thin and lightweight dinnerware that is easy to handle
  • Practical – Compact and stackable so it can be efficiently stored in the cupboard

A 12 piece dinner set includes 4 x 26cm dinner plates, 4 x 22cm luncheon plates, and 4 x 18oz cereal bowls.

I think a Corelle dinner set would be brilliant for every day use in our home, now all I have to do now is persuade my girlfriend to pack away her old sentimental dinner set, which may easier said than done!

Reviews of Corelle 12-Piece Chip and Break Resistant Dinner Sets

The reviews given about Corelle 12 piece dinner sets on Amazon.co.uk are very favourable. Most reviews mention that the crockery feels very light in weight, but is tough enough to withstand almost everything, except perhaps for the UK postal system! A few purchasers say that the plates are thinner than standard ceramic plates and this makes for easy loading and unloading of the dishwasher, and their lightness makes lifting up to high cupboards a breeze.

A small negative point made by a few people is that these 12 piece crockery sets are fine for everyday use, but would probably not be first choice for a dinner party, however, with this is mind, it must be noted that most of the buyers like the shiny surface and think that the dinner sets looks good. One mentions the word ‘minimalistic’ whilst another says that her dinner set ‘oozes quality’ which is okay in my book.

With a wide range of styles and colours to choose from, we reckon that these 12 Piece Corelle Vitrelle Dinner Sets are an excellent purchase.

The Brilliant Tefal So Tasty Non-Stick Wok

This Editor’s Choice article is all about the Tefal So Tasty Non-Stick 28cm Wok however since we first published it, this wok has now been superceded by even better products from Tefal. Our Tefal wok is still going strong so we are keeping this article live and any links you follow will take you to an equivalent or better product. You really should view Tefal’s range of 28cm woks as they are excellent!

The Tefal So Tasty Non-Stick 28cm Wok is a tried and tested stirfry pan that does a great job at all kinds of cooking. Here at the Kitchen & Cook Shop we have an older version of this wok that is still going strong, and it has seen an awful lot of use as we love cooking curries, stir-frys, chilli con carne, and spaghetti bolognese in it.

Tefal So Tasty Non-Stick 28cm Wok

Tefal Woks have extremely hard wearing non-stick coatings that are scratch resistant. In fact the majority of reviewers say they are impressed with how difficult it is to scratch them and even burnt food is easily cleaned off. The manufacturers claim that the coating is that durable that you can even use metal utensils in it. For me that goes against an important rule for non-stick pans so its not something I’m willing to try out!

I really like the red thermospot in the middle of the pan that indicates when the pan has reached a good heat ready for use and tells you when its time to throw in the ingredients. The solid bottom is great as I’ve found some other woks are too light and easy to knock over, or off the gas stove.

The sides aren’t quite so high as some other woks, but you can cook a great many things in it. It is light and conducts heat well because it is made from aluminium, and this wok has a hard-wearing enamel exterior which makes it look very stylish. I think it is great value for money as well and so far we have used it for over 5 years with no problems at all.

Overall reviewers are very happy with the Tefal So Tasty Wok. Tefal is a trusted name in cookware, so you know you are buying a quality product and it’s recommended by us here at the Kitchen & Cook Shop.

Check out the range of Tefal 28cm woks now on Amazon UK.

Christmas Cooking Tip: Pick up Roast Turkey with Ease

Santa ClausIt’s Christmas Day. Imagine the scene if you will… The kids are running around playing with their new toys. Family members are arriving to join you for the day. Grandma’s slowly getting drunk on port. The TV is showing ‘Home Alone’ (again). The cat is attacking the Christmas tree, the dog is jumping on everyone, and you’re struggling to lift the massive roast turkey out of the boiling hot pan. The roasting fork is too long and can’t quite give enough purchase so you’ve opted for a couple of normal table forks. Slowly, and with great effort, you carefully lift the roast turkey out of the pan, but just as you get to a height where you can carrying the roasted bird over the pan sides, you lose grip on one of the forks!

In what seems like slow motion, the prize turkey that has been roasting in the oven for the last 5 hours, slips out of your grasp and falls with a resounding thump to the floor. Your world stops and begins to fall apart. Your Mother-in-law cackles. The kids run into the kitchen, pointing and laughing. Drunken Grandma slumps into a flower pot. The cat stares at you from the top of the Christmas tree, and the dog bounds in, grabs a mouthful of turkey breast from the floor and leaps away.

Aaagghhhh!

OXO Good Grips Poultry Lifter
OXO Good Grips Poultry Lifter

Wouldn’t it be so much easier if you had a kitchen gadget that makes lifting your roasted poultry a breeze. Have no fear! OXO, our favourite kitchen tools maker, comes to the rescue. Take a look at the fantastic OXO Good Grips Poultry Lifter available on Amazon UK. Part of their Good Grips range, this poultry lifter makes it so easy to transfer roasted poultry and game of all sizes from one dish to another. The soft handle is ergonomically design to be comfortable and non-slip and the prongs have been specially created to secure the bird without piercing or damaging the meat. Its design aims to prevent any slippage or twisting and because the OXO Good Grips Poultry Lifter is shaped to lift from underneath the breast bone, the roasted turkey always looks perfect from the outside and presentation ready.

This stainless steel poultry lifter is safe to put in the dishwasher and what’s even better is that it can carry a roast turkey, chicken or other roasted bird weighing up to 9kg/20lbs! It’s also great value too.

Here at Kitchen & Cook Shop, we highly recommend the OXO Good Grips Poultry Lifter. We’ve had our fair share of dropped roasted chickens (albeit not onto the floor but onto the kitchen counter top) due to struggling with two forks so this is one kitchen tool that we are sure to purchase before Christmas this year!

Thanks for reading.
